Let us start off by asking the question, "What is a dry snorkel?"  Trust us when we say, we had somebody in the office respond, "Is a dry snorkel like a regular snorkel but repels water and doesn't get wet?"  We all laughed at that one but that answer wasn't ENTIRELY wrong...

The dry snorkel was invented to prevent water from entering through the top of snorkel accidentally by a wave or purposely when you dive down underwater. So in a sense, it is "like a regular snorkel that repels water".  But how is that even possible?  Modern technology my friends.

This is done by a mechanism that is placed at the top of the snorkel.  It is controlled by its buoyancy to water, when you go under is drops down sealing the snorkel and when you pop back up out of the water, it returns to it's original position. Besides this great feature, read on to learn more about what to look for before purchasing one of the best dry snorkels on the market.

Fully designed Dry snorkel.

The first thing to look for in your dry snorkel is its size and design. Ideally, you want a dry snorkel that has smooth, continuous lines. Some snorkels are designed with cumbersome turns in their path that can make using them awkward and cause an unnecessary distance between you and your source of oxygen. Their upside, however, is that they generally let in less water. While a snorkel with a larger diameter will make for easier breathing, keep in mind it will also be harder to clear them should water enter. Look for dry snorkels that have flexible tubing where it turns to enter your mouth. This will make the fit more adaptable to your needs. This feature is much more desirable if you plan on using your dry snorkel while you scuba dive as it makes switching from your regulator much easier.

Most dry snorkels are made out of silicone and plastic which increase their durability. This is a huge advantage when you consider the duress this item can take when you’re traveling, diving, on a boat, etc. Some of the best dry snorkels actually come in separate pieces which makes replacing them easy should a component break. The mouthpiece of a snorkel, for example, can become worn over time and having a detachable one will save you money when it becomes necessary to replace it.

Filtration system of excess water to purge out of the dry snorkel.

You’ll want a dry snorkel that is able to maintain dryness as this will make it easier for you to breathe and clearing it of water less necessary.  Modern dry snorkels generally feature dryer material which helps keep water out until you decide to blow. This will add bulk, however, modern advancements are constantly cutting back on this.

If you don’t want to spend the money, look for snorkels that feature water deflectors or splash guards. These are simpler options that will cut down on the weight. Unfortunately, though, this will also make it more difficult to clear the snorkel of water. If you’re thinking about using a splash guard, look for snorkels that feature them as detachable accessories. That way if you decide you don’t care for it, you can simply remove it.

Here is another tip of advice!  If you’re buying your snorkel separate from your Scuba Mask, check to make sure the attachments and the mask are compatible. Look for snorkels that feature adjustments which will make it easier to attach to the mask securely.  The best dry snorkels will give you the option to slide, lock and rotate which makes attaching it to your mask that much easier.

We hope now you are more educated about dry snorkels and you feel more confident in your future purpose.  Based on expert reports and consumer reviews, the following are the All Top 3 best dry snorkels of 2016.

In its very simplest form, a snorkel is a bent tube that enables you to breath with your face underwater. Quite naturally, the configuration of that tube and the design of its components will determine its level of comfort during use. All ScubaPro snorkels are hydro-dynamically designed for ease of use. Elliptical barrel models cut through water with very little resistance, allowing unrestricted breathing and ease of clearing. Contoured models bend closely around your head to minimize drag. Semi-dry top models help prevent water entry into tube. All models incorporate specially-designed mouthpieces that conform correctly to your bite, and can be angled for maximum comfort.
